Butterfly Decanter

A Congac bottle is transformed into a lovely butterfly decanter.

Materials:

#77-7721 Armour Bottle and Jar Cutter

#15-0275 Etch Bath

#08-9999 Non-latex Gloves

#61-3341 Quick Grip glue

Fancy round bottle (Congac, Brandy, or similar shaped bottles)

Vinyl adhesive backed Butterfly stickers

Wood ball cabinet knob

Glossy black glass paint

1 inch Flat paint brush

Loose fitting Synthetic cork

Clear plastic container slightly larger than bottle for dipping

Newspaper

Safety glasses

Canvas cut resistant gloves (gardening gloves work well)

Erasable marker or something that will write on the plastic container

Paper towels

Important Information:

Please read entire directions below and the directions for the Bottle and Jar cutter and Etch Bath before starting. Prepare your work surface in advance. Wear safety goggles and cut resistant gloves during bottle cutting. Wear the non-latex gloves when working with Etch Bath. Directions:

1. Put on canvas gloves and safety glasses

2. Cut the neck off the bottle, leaving about 1 inch. Sand off the sharp cut edges with the sandpaper provided with your kit.

3. Rinse the bottle under running water to remove glass fragments first, then wash with dish detergent and water.

4. Apply the butterfly stickers each side of the bottle. Rub over the stickers and make sure edges are not lifted

5. Place the bottle in the container. Fill the container with water up to the neck of the bottle. Remove the bottle and mark the water line. Dump the water out of the container and dry off both container and bottle.

6. Put on the non-latex gloves. Shake the bottle of Etch Bath until the contents are evenly distributed and there is no sediment in the bottom of the bottle. The bottle should feel even in weight in the top and the bottom when you lay it in your hand.

7. Fill the container with Etch Bath up to the line you marked on the side of the container.

8. Dip the bottle into the Etch Bath. Hold the bottle without touching the sides of the container until frosted (2-5 min). After that time, raise it out of the bath to see if it is frosted. If the glass seems fully frosted, remove the bottle from the bath and rinse off under running water. If it has not fully frosted, lower it back into the bath for another 2 to 5 minutes. Rinse and dry bottle once it is sufficiently frosted. Remove the stickers.

Decorating the bottle:

2. Paint the bottle and wood cabinet knob. Set aside to dry

1. Glue flat side of wood ball to the top of the cork. Set aside to dry.
